Silence Is Back
No radio we’re too
far into the desert
where the showoffs and the ball games disappear
where talk shows turn to static then tranquility
and there’s silence for pop songs
and the headlines on the hour
Then Indian drums broadcast
on the wind
into the moonlit night
where lovers going calmly with their superstitions
believe what they believe
unmoved by the opinions of a talk show host
and accusations flying from the radio tower and
Chorus
Silence is back
in the darkness and the desert wind
Silence is back in the cities and the shops we’re in
Silence is back
Too soulful to rage on too peaceful to attack
Silence is back
In the noise of news reports
and my bungled meditation
there goes the stillness of the setting sun
I am mindful now of crime scenes battle grounds
and a goodness in the world
that goes uncaptured on video tape
Then a jazz quartet softly
in the cell phones and the civic centers
We are punch drunk with gossip and coffee advertising
but we believe what we believe
And I’m turning my attention from a shouting match
to a sailboat in the wind running off the cape
Chorus
In the moonlit desert I take
my lover’s hand
we’re walking on the sugar dunes
it’s a world away from the Soda Wars
there’s a stillness alive unbroken by arguments
there is no national debate
just the sound of the moon when it shines
and the rain when it pours
and silence
