Southern Ocean

Somewhere on the Southern Ocean
the whaling ship Nishin Mahru
turns the sea into blood
and hauls in another dying blue
And the governor called a meeting
the news man ran old video clips
and that's all I heard about
the dying whales and the factory ships

What noble cause graces the hunt
what great need is unattended still
jobs and economic gain
do not justify the kill
Winter stores and medicine
the trade goes centuries back
now they sail out on the water
for pet food and aphrodisiac

Somewhere on the Southern Ocean
somewhere

Somewhere on the Southern Ocean
out beyond the beaches and the nightly news
old fishing boats are washed up on a colorful brochure
oh the oceans we'll cross on our vacation cruise

Harpoons explode off the bows
of the whaling ship Nishin Mahru
in the latitudes of sanctuary
for the right whale and the mighty blue
agreements signed in Switzerland
don't mean much on the open seas
though they have been translated for
the Russians and the Japanese

Somewhere
Somewhere on the Southern Ocean
Somewhere
