Walking Across Arkansas

Spent ten years piloting an oil supply boat
from the bay to Platform Galveston in the Gulf Of Mexico
ferrying men and machinery to hunt for petroleum
‘til I tested positive for pot and the company let me go
And it may look like I am running running running from the law
but I’m just walking across Arkansas

I’m an ocean operator with no accidents or injuries
and the company they usually cut me a little slack
so I took a hit at my vacation despite layoffs and hard times
and the assholes tested me for drugs the minute I got back
And it may look like I am running running running from the law
but I’m just walking across Arkansas

They said son if you go quietly we won’t inform the Coast Guard
so trust me my dear Rosalind though I must start from scratch
I took all the money we could spare and I’m headed for the West Coast
I hear they’re hiring out of San Pedro for work in the Oil Patch
And it may look like I am running running running from the law
but I’m just walking across Arkansas

There are two laws of life we need love and we need work
everybody’s got a dried up rose and an old pay stub
Rosi I can operate a 100 ton vessel in 20 foot seas
as easily as I can drive a toy boat in the tub
And it may look like I am running running running from the law
but I’m just walking across Arkansas

So forgive me my dear Rosalind but I’ll be back someday
I went out to find my way back to the sea
there’s a sign on the road and it says “Do Not Pick Up Hitchhikers”
and its shadow stretches to the fence of the penitentiary
And it may look like I am running running running from the law
but I’m just walking across Arkansas
